Principal News
The Feast of the Assumption
Sunday, 15 August, the Church celebrates the Feast Day of the Assumption of Our Lady when according to our faith, the Holy Mother, “having completed her course of her earthly life was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory".
The Assumption signals the end of Mary's earthly life and marks her return to heaven to be reunited with Jesus. While the bodies of both Jesus and Mary are now in heaven, there is a difference between the Assumption and the Resurrection. Where Jesus arose from the tomb and ascended into heaven by his own power, Mary's body was taken up to heaven by the power of her Son.
The Feast of the Assumption is a Holy Day of Obligation, and I invite you to attend our Parish Mass at 9:00am on Sunday, 15 August, and join us and our Parish School Community.
Mini Mack's Transition Program
On Friday 13th August, we will welcome our OLHC Mini Mac's into our parish school family. Mini Mack's is our transition program for kindergarten students. Mini Mack's attend school every Friday morning to engage in prayer, play based learning, building relationships and most importantly develop a sense of community and belonging for themselves and their families. We look forward to continuing to offer many wonderful opportunities for all of our students and families at our parish school.
Book Week- Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds
Book Week is approaching with our book fair in the library between Monday 30th August- Friday 10th September and that means plenty of fun here at OLHC. Our Book Character Parade will be at 9am on Friday 10th September. The Book Fair is being held in the school library and parents are more than welcome to have a look and purchase as many books as you like for your children or to donate to the school. At this stage everything will be availble online due to Covid restrictions.
With all the fun things happening it is good to pause and reflect that we have this week to generate some enthusiasm for reading and the obvious benefits that can be gained from reading books. I encourage all our students to make a special effort to read a bit more during this week.
Acts of Kindness
So many times in life we have the opportunity to help other people. This can be in small ways like giving someone a smile, speaking nicely to people, inviting and including people in our games or group, helping someone when they are hurt or even as simple as listening to someone when they need to tell you something.
Helping other people makes you feel good and God wants us to help others just like Jesus did. When we work together and help each other we are showing the face of Jesus and we can do amazing things. Take some time this week to think about all the little things people are doing to help each other and what you could do at school and at home to help others.
Growth Mindset
GROWTH MINDSET
As parents and teachers the most important message of all for our children is to encourage a "growth mindset" – let your children know that they have unlimited potential for learning and that being successful is all about working hard … use growth praise such as,
"It is great that you have learnt that. Can you show me how to do that?"
"I really like your thinking about that."
"You have worked really hard to learn that. I'm so proud of you!"
We found that students' mindset, ‘how they perceive their abilities’ played a key role in their motivation and achievement, and we found that if we changed students' mindset, we could boost their achievement.

School Fees
School Fee Accounts were sent home last week for all families at OLHC.
Thank you to those families who continue their commitment to pay their fees. School fees play a vital role in ensuring that we can contniue to offer our children the very best resources and learning opportunities here at OLHC.
If you need to discuss fees or arrange a payment plan, please phone the office and make an appointment to see me. I will always work with families to ensure that no family is disadvantaged or a child misses out due to hardship.
Who am I?
Year 4 have been working on developing their skills in writing informative texts. They have realised that writing informative texts does not need to be dull and boring and that it is actually quite fun and engaging. During the week, I was challenged to read some of their pieces of writing and try and guess the animal they were describing. I didn't do very well. See how you go!
What Animal is it ?
Gilding from tree to tree in northern and eastern Australian forests and woodlands, is an animal with a small head but huge round eyes. What makes this animal glide is tendons from its arms to its legs.
This animal is an aussie nocturnal marsupial that is named after its love of sweet foods like sticky sap and nectar. Its natural predators include owls , goannas, pythons, kookaburras and quolls. Humans are threats to taking down their trees and forests. They live by trees and are rare to be seen in the day. They can live up to 10-12 years of age. If you lisencarfully it sounds like snake hisses,short and repetitive.

Who am I?
We live for about 10 to 15 years and there are an estimated 10 thousand of us on Rottnest Island. You can feed me leaves or bark but I love Eucalyptus leaves. We normally have up to 17 babies in a year. I’m a herbivore so don’t give me that disgusting meat. We were discovered in the 1600’s with our old good friends kangaroos, after we finish giving birth we mate after 18 months. We live on Rottnest Island in WA. You have to go on a fairy to get to use the Rottnest express. Our predators are dingos and birds, we hate those little rats so much. Our prey is a snake. We love them so much. We move fiercely and fastly, we don’t say much in the wild.

Who Am I?
I seek food in my shadowy desert, preferably meat. My padded paws fly across the red dirt as I sleekly approach a hare. My pack isn't far behind, they’re relying on me to get this. My ears point up and I’m off on the run for this scrumptious hare. I’ve got it but now I’m hearing my pack howling. I ran over to find them howling at a red belly black snake. I run away and my pack follows.

My burrow is nestled up against the great oak tree, hanging over my muddy river bank.
I eat worms and other small animals that live in my river. Us animals hate our 8 dangerous predators.
The females of our type lay eggs. Us aussie marsupials are native to Easten Australia.
We have annoying stubby little feet. The baby version of me is called a puggle.
The males have a venom spur on their back leg. I can live for up to 17 years.
My 8 predators are goannas,water rats, snakes,spotted quolls,hawks,eagles, owls, eels
Who Am I ?
What am I?
In the sunny woodlands of Queensland, Australia lives one of the most deadly reptiles on the planet.
This calm but dangerous predator has razor sharp fangs and killer venom.
As it slithers out of it’s rotten, hollow log,the sun catches it’s eye. It lies on a flat, smooth rock to sunbathe.
This predator is a dark tan, dark blue or a light olive. It hides in the bushes and waits for its prey (plague rat) to come and scurry by. It strikes at the rat, biting it several times and not letting go.
It’s scaly body is smooth but also bumpy, like scales should be.
Watching out for its predator, the king brown snake, it slowly slithers back into its home. Watching, waiting.

NAIDOC Celebration
Last Friday, we celebrated an end to our NAIDOC Week with a beautiful liturgy led by our Indigenous students, Year 6 leaders and Mrs Papworth. Our liturgy celebrated this years NAIDOC theme - Heal Country! We are called to heal our nation! For our indigenous people, country is part of their identity. It is family, kin, law, ceremony, tradition, and language. Through their languages, songs, ceremonies, and traditions they celebrate Country and Country speaks to them. Over the last 230 years this has not been valued and respected. Our prayer on Friday, was that we begin to heal our country by embracing First Nations’ cultural knowledge and understandings of Country.

World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly - #iamwithyoualways
Sunday, 25 July was the first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly designated by Pope Francis. The theme for this inaugural commemoration was “I am with you always” (Mt 28:20). It expresses the closeness of the Lord and the Church to every older person, especially in these challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic.
We also celebrated the Feast of St Anne and St Joachim, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and grandparents of Jesus Christ. Sts Anne and Joachim raised the young Mary to love God, preparing her for her role in the life of Jesus. Not only are grandchildren and youths invited to be present in the lives of older people, but older people and grandparents also have a mission of evangelization, proclamation and prayer, and of encouraging young people in their faith.
We look forward to welcoming our grandparents and elderly friends back to our school in the future - we have missed you! We thank God for all our grandparents and special elderly role models in our lives.
MacKillop Youth
This week, MacKillop Youth sent an envelope filled with letters to the residents of St Joseph's Nursing Home in Lismore.
The students have learned about serving their community, just as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop did, and how connections are so important at this time, with COVID isolating so many of our most vulnerable people.
We are looking forward to receiving replies and establishing penpal relationships with the residents! I am so proud of our committed MacKillop Youth group - thank you boys and girls.
Fratelli Tutti - Year 3
Fratelli Tutti means “all brothers and sisters” and Year 3 looked at the Encyclical from Pope Francis thinking about all their brothers and sisters around the world; the environment and; how the pandemic has changed our lives. The children watched a video explaining the Encyclical and chose to write or illustrate things they understood from Pope Francis’ words.
As always the children were so insightful and saw things like, building bridges and not walls, loving everyone with no exclusions, togetherness and making our world a better place, as important take away messages.

Sacrament - postponed
Our Sacrament of Confirmation scheduled for 19th August, 2021 has been postponed until Thursday, 28th October 2021, due to the continuously evolving COVID uncertainty. Further information will be communicated closer to the date. Thank you all for your understanding.

This fortnight in Year 3, the students have been practising their multiplication facts in a team game. They compete against the opposite team to recall their facts quickly and then have to throw a rolled up piece of paper into a bin to get a point for their team. The race is very close at the moment!
Our students have been focusing on improving their oral and written sentence structure by giving each other feedback and working together to improve their writing.
Year 4
This week, Year 4 have been practising breaking words into syllables to help them to spell more challenging words. In Reading, they are learning about the different ways authors share information in texts and are learning to apply this to their own writing.
Year 5
In reading, Year 5 have been learning about and identifying examples of figurative language. They are learning to apply this to compose poems. The students were given a challenge to compose a poem that included three types of figurative language to be added to their Poet-Tree.
Year 6
In Mathematics, Year 6 have been learing about position. They have been playing Battleships online using coordinates with a partner and were challenged to create a treasure map of our school using a compass.

Book Week 2021
This year, we will celebrate Book Week in Week 9 Term 3. On Friday 10th September, we will hold our Book Week Dress Up day. Students are encouraged to come dressed up as their favourite book character in the years theme : Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds.
Book Fair
Our OLHC Book Fair will take place from August 30th until Friday 10th September. Details on how to order books will come out in the coming weeks. We will be using the online order system again as current COVID restrictions mean we are unable to open our book fair up to our community.
The book fair is a great opportunity to buy books for your children (and some sneaky Christmas gifts) and to also support the school as we earn rewards to spend on books for our library.
OSHC Educators Day July 28 th 2021
On Wednesday at After School Care we celebrated our OSHC Educators (Katie
M., Katie A., Sheree, Sarah and Kate) and thanked them for the work that they
do with children, families and the community. We had a surprise party for the
educators and children.
In the school age care setting, educators have the opportunity to “encourage
children’s engagement in a range of play and leisure experiences that allow
them to feel happy, safe and relaxed, and interact with friends, practice social
skills, solve problems, try new experiences, and learn life skills.” (My Time Our
Place)
The educators at OSHC feel grateful to be working with your children and
recognize the important role that the service plays in the life of families.
A big thank you to the Marnie C and Abigail P for their generous donation of books to our library. If you have any books that are in great condition that you would like to donate, please send them in.
