October – Month of Mary and the Holy Rosary
October is the month of the Holy Rosary. One of the main reasons is October 7 every year is the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. This feast was introduced in 1571 by Pope Saint Pius V (1504-1572) in honour and gratitude of the Blessed Virgin Mary for her intercession resulting in the miraculous victory of the Christian forces on October 7, 1571 in the famous Battle of Lepanto. The Pope strongly believed that it was more of the power of prayer of the rosary than of the weapons and valour of the soldiers. Historically, there were several other battles where the rosary was prayed while the soldiers are fighting to resist the invading enemies and the Christians ended up victorious. Because of these, the devotion to the praying of the rosary and the dedication of the month of October to its prayer spread throughout Christianity.
The Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women
and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen
The Hail Mary is our greatest prayer to Mary, who is the Mother of the Church and a spiritual mother to each of us. The first part of the Hail Mary is taken from the Gospel. It incorporates the words of the Angel Gabriel at the Annunciation ("Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you," Lk 1:28) and the words of Elizabeth to Mary at the Visitation ("Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb," Lk 1:42).
The angel's greeting to Mary can be translated "rejoice," indicating that the promised Messiah, Mary's Son, is coming to save His people. The words of Elizabeth to Mary are a benediction, echoing God's favour to the Blessed Virgin in choosing her to be the Mother of His Son.
The second part of the prayer ("Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of death. Amen") is the Church's reflection on Mary's intercessory role as the Mother of God for all of us as members of the Church. It reflects the Church's teaching on her preeminent place in the Communion of Saints in interceding for God's people.
Welcome to Term 4
It was such a privilege to see the smiling faces of our children, staff and parents as they arrived at school this week as we returned from lockdown to full face to face teaching. It was an absolute joy to witness the excitement on their faces and watch the way our children greeted each other and staff members. Thank you to parents, guardians and grandparents for your friendly waves, good morning smiles and nods and casual chats that I experience out the front of the school each morning. We have an amazing community here at OLHC and there is nothing stronger than the relationships we have built and the sense of belonging that exists for all members of our parish school. We are truly blessed to have such a welcoming, vibrant and thriving community.
Kevin Hogan Book Award
Congratulations to Georgia Goodwin for being the successful recipient of the Kevin Hogan Book award for 2021. Georgia received the award after being nominated by her teachers for her perseverance and dedication to all areas of her school life both academic and in her relationships with peers and teachers.
Congratulations Goergia on this wonderful achievement.
School Improvements
We have had an enormous amount of work happening in the school and today brings us very close to the end of this work. Our new buildings have reached completion and are now in council for final approval, we have a fresh coat of paint on all of our classrooms, the verandah areas have been re-oiled and are looking amazing and finally our new outdoor learning and play space is just about complete. This will be an amazing addition to our playground and allow students to play basketball, netball, volleyball and enjoy a purpose built space to improve their skills and knowledge. I would like to thank everyone involved in making this work happen and our staff, parents and students for your patience during the building process.
I would also like to mention a special thank you to Father Peter, for his ongoing support and unrelenting focus to ensure that our children have everything they need at OLHC. His love and support of our parish school is extraordinary and we are extremely grateful for everything that he does to support the outstanding work that is happening here at OLHC.

Book Week Dress Up
Our Book Character Parade will be at 9am on Friday 5th November.
With all the fun things happening it is good to pause and reflect that we have this week to generate some enthusiasm for reading and the obvious benefits that can be gained from reading books. I encourage all our students to make a special effort to read a bit more during this week.

Our 'My Name is Joseph' Songbirds: Ellanor, Jemima, Heidi, Holly and Milani
Good News Story - My Name is Joseph
During the last school holidays, Ellanor, Jemima, Holly and Heidi W and Milani H were invited to sing on a newly written song called My Name is Joseph by Andrew Chinn & Drew Lane. The song is about St Joseph from a Christmas perspective. The song was then turned into a beautifully illustrated singalong book by Andrew’s wife, Bernadette, and shared to YouTube - you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwVqkGiK85g.
The girls did such a wonderful job that they were invited to sing on another song (yet to be released) called Jesus is our Friend, and we look forward to hearing them perform on the new track in the near future!
Andrew then approached me to see if we could record a film clip for the song that will be used to teach students actions that go along with the song, in classrooms all over Australia and the world! Our Year 5 class have graciously responded to the call and we look forward to sharing this with our community later in Advent.
It has been fantastic to work with the wonderful, professional and faith filled team at Butterfly House and we have loved the opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ to children all over the world!
FINAL WEEK FOR SUITCASES OF LOVE - WEEK 3
Week 3 will be our final collection of items for Suitcases of Love. It is incredible the amount of love shown by our school community and we are truly humbled by the donations. MacKillop Youth will sort all of the donations in Week 4 and get the suitcases ready for our donation to CASPA.
Again, I would sincerely like to thank our community for the generosity and love you have shared with children in need.
Socktober - Save the Date 29th October 2021
Socktober for Mission Month encourages us to engage with mission for children by using our heads to enquire about the reality of the world around us, using our hearts to feel empathy for those in situations of great need, and using our hands to take action for them in whatever way we are able.
This year, we are asking for a gold coin donation to support children in Thailand. During Socktober our students are encouraged to learn what life is like for children from Thailand, specifically those from slum areas in Bangkok.

2O
2O have been busy looking for exciting words in our library books. We had a day of learning all about 3D shapes. First we sorted a variety of 3D shapes into categories. Then we used our secrets to help us work out spelling for 3D shape posters. We worked together to create persuasive texts to convince others in our class that our shape was the best. For Health we created pop-up boxes using a cube net, on the inside of the net we listed the people in our support networks.
Stage 2
Year 3 and 4 have been learning how to add and subtract decimals/money and to calculate change. They have been practising their knowledge of addition and subtraction facts in order to help them solve problems involving decimals.

Stage 3
In Music, Stage 3 are learning how to play the Ukulele. Year 5 spent some time practising strumming this week and Year 6 participated in a Kahoot task to assess their knowledge of famous Ukulele players. Year 6 have also been applying their knowledge of multiplication and division to calculate the number of points a player scored in a season and the average scores.

Book Club - Issue 7 2021
Book Club issue 7 booklets went home at the start of the week. Book club is ordered through the LOOP app or through www.scholastic.com.au/book-club/book-club-parents
