We are truly blessed at OLHC to have such passionate and dedicated teachers who are prepared to give their all and do whatever it takes for our children. With all of the challenges and opportunities we have all witnessed during 2022, the extraordinary work of our teachers has ensured that our children have continued to know that they are loved, cared for and belong here at OLHC.

Consultation Process-Vision for the Future
We are currently working with the Catholic Schools Office, Capital Insight and the Flood Commission to plan the consultation process as we look to the future at OLHC.
Part of this process is ensuring that we have all had an opportunity to have our voice heard as we work together to make informed decisions for our vision moving forward and opportunities to continue to strengthen our work here at OLHC.
We will be holding sessions during Week 6 and I hope that all families are able to attend one of these sessions to be a valued part of shaping the decisions made for our community here at OLHC.

Together we have worked through what has been a challenging year and we have achieved great things. We have relocated, set up a new temporary school, returned to a strong learning agenda and focused on student wellbeing at the same time as supporting many families who were impacted by the floods.
Whilst we haven't been able to offer everything during this time, we have focused on the priority of learning and wellbeing and we are excited to look forward to the future and hear your thoughts about where to next and opportunities for 2023 and beyond.
I would like to thank all families who have stood by us during a very challenging year. It is when times are tough and we are forced to face challenges that we never dreamed of that we find out what we are truly made of.
I am so proud of our school community and we look forward to planning our future together with you.
Years 1 to 6 Mathematics Assessments in 2023
In 2023, OLHC will continue with the staggered start at the beginning of the year as we continue our strategic focus on improving the mathematical learning of our students. All students in Years 1-6 will be assessed using the Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) on Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st January. Our teachers will be taking two days to conduct the MAI with each student of their class. This is a one-on-one interview style assessment directed by the teacher and gives a wonderful opportunity for the student and teacher to have this rich discussion on mathematical processes at the commencement of the school year. Each assessment will take 30 minutes per child unless doing the assessment for the first time. More details and an interview on-line booking schedule will be sent home towards the end of term.
School will commence for students in Years 1-6 on Wednesday 1st February 2023.
Resilience Project
On Friday 4th November our school will be participating in the Resilience Survey.
The Resilience Survey is Australia’s most widely utilised mental health and wellbeing survey for schools, designed and delivered by Resilient Youth Australia. It is the first step in a new local initiative, the Resilient Kids program.
Funded by Healthy North Coast and supported by a $10 million grant over 4 years from the National Emergency Management Agency, Resilient Kids will implement mental health and trauma-informed supports for primary and secondary school-aged students across the Northern Rivers.
The Resilience Survey measures the self-reported resilience and wellbeing of students and will provide valuable information to assist us to design supports that meet our students’ needs.
While the survey is completely voluntary, the more students that participate, the better picture we will have of how our young people are going and the better we can respond.
More information about this project has been sent home with your child today.
Extra Curricular Activities
This term we have new and exciting extra-curricular activities for our students to experience and
enjoy during afternoon tea. These activities have been chosen after speaking with students and
finding out what types of things they would like to be involved in or experience at school. The
following activities will run all term and I encourage you to speak with your child about being
involved in at least one activity.

Thursday- Art and Craft
Friday- Lego Marble Run
Confiscated Chromebooks
During the week I was asked to play the 'bad guy' and confiscate Year 2 chromebooks as part of their writing stimulus. After telling our Year 2 children that they have been spending too much time on the chromebooks and as a result their bookwork is not meeting our school expectations, they were set the challenge of persuading me to give them back.

Every student in Year 2 needs a chromebook! We need to learn technology skills on our chromebooks. In high school we will only be doing our work on computers. There will not be any worksheets or books.
We also use our chromebooks for maths games like Prodogy and Sumdog. We also have fantastic learning apps and Essential Assessment.

Year 2 demands that we are given our chromebooks back so we can all learn! All the children will suffer with their learning because we will be tired of doing all our work in our books. My mum and dad love it when they see my beautiful learning on Seesaw.
I am now worried that I will be a terrible learner when I grow up because we have no chromebooks. So hurry up! We need our chromebooks back!

Weekly Expectation Focus
Week 4- Be Repectful
We demonstrate love and respect when we speak politely and listen to each other.
During Week 4, students and staff will pay extra attention to catching themselves and others speaking politely and listening to each other. I know that the Gotcha box will be full at the end of the week.
Sacrament of Confirmation
Last night we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation with 40 children. As Father Peter remarked - it was the beginning of the next chapter in the history of our Parish as it was the first celebration back in our church after the rebuild. The church was missing many elements that make it recognisable as a place of worship, but what was present was a full and loving community of God, together to celebrate the special sacrament of Confirmation.
The children were wonderful in their preparation and although a little nervous, did a fantastic job on the night answering the big questions put to them by Bishop Homeming!
Thank you to Father Peter for working so hard to get us back into the church and to Bishop Homeming for celebrating the sacrament at OLHC.

The first mass back in our parish church will be at 9am this Sunday morning. We invite all families to come along and support our Parish this weekend. All are welcome and please contact Mrs Hague if you would like any further information about mass, our church or our wonderful parish!
Exuro
Last Tuesday, 8 amazing Year 5 students accompanied by Mrs Lindsay, trekked to Tullera Hall to participate in the Diocesan retreat - Exuro. The Scripture that themes the day was from 1 TIMOTHY 4:12 “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith and purity.” The students explored this theme and had a wonderful day. Thank you to Maggie and Ryan for sharing their thoughts on the day below:
I loved everything about EXURO at Tullera Hall. Tory, Mrs Hague and the Year 10's did an awesome job. There were so many new people to meet. I highly recommend EXURO. -Ryan
Exuro was an amazing experience for me, and I enjoyed every second of it. It brought me closer to God and made me understand my faith more. I had fun with my friends and met amazing new people. Mrs Hague did a wonderful job and even organised a small liturgy at the end of the day that everyone got to take part in. I would love to go back and do it all again, but that's what Incitare is for, next year. I highly recommend Exuro, it was one of the best days of my life! -Maggie
Year 5 Leadership Day
Last Friday, Year 5 were invited to a Leadership Day at Trinity Catholic College with the Year 10 Youth Ministry Class and their wonderful, faith filled Youth and Ministry Coordinator, Tory Puglisi. The day focused on building leadership qualities for our Year 5 class as they step into formal leadership roles next Year in Year 6. Thank you to Claire G for sharing her thoughts on the day below:
The Year 5 Leadership day on Friday was very fun, interesting, exciting and intriguing. We learnt how to be active listeners and how we can be better leaders for our school when we are in year 6 next year. There were fun team building activities such as making the tallest tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows, which required listening to your teammates, as well as we had to figure out who would be the best well known leaders for 3 crazy scenarios. The liturgy at the end of the day was very nice and relaxing. We all learnt to listen to each other's ideas, which is very important, and to work together as a team. The year 10 Trinity students were very helpful and nice, so all in all, it was an amazing day. -Claire

Art and Learning Showcase
Last week, we hosted our first Art and Learning Showcase. Our students have created so many amazing artworks, we just had to share them with you! The photos below also include items of learning that our students wanted to put on display to share with their families.
Thank you to Mrs Hayward who organised the evening and to the RFF team- Mrs Hayward, Mrs Anemaat, Mrs MacPherson and Mrs McAnelly for the creative and fun art activities you did with our students.
Congratulations to our students whose artworks had the most votes in our competition. Their artworks will now be put on display as part of the Catholic Schools Office Art Display.

Unfortunately, we were unable to begin gymnastics this week, therefore we will start next week.
Competitive Swimming Event
For those students that put their names down for the Competitive Swimming Event, I will organise notes for next week. We had to change a few plans due to circumstances out of our control.

School News
On Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th October Laini Lynch & Isabella Fifield competed in the Far North Coast Zone Physie Competition in Grafton. Laini took out 1st place and won Zone Champion in the 9yrs & Issy came 2nd in the 8yrs. They have both qualified to compete at The National Championships on the 27th November at Sydney Olympic Park - a great achievement for both girls. We wish them luck for Sydney where they will compete against the top 5 placegetters from each zone in the country.

Over the 6 weeks you will be introduced to the foundations of music through singing, percussion, instrument playing and movement as well as an introduction to music reading. During the course we will have visits from our inspiring tutors demonstrating a range of instruments.
